The method involves illuminating a surface (2) of an object (1) by a light arrangement (L), and taking up images of the object surface by using cameras (K1-k3). The arrangement is used with monochromatic lights (L1, L2, L3) radiating with different wavelengths. Height gradients of the surface in two directions are determined from brightness distributions received in the cameras by using an evaluation device, where the distributions for the different wavelengths are separated and are detected by the object surface. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing three-dimensional optical detection of a surface of an object.
