The abrasion-resistant coating for a carrier material such as a piston ring useful in an internal combustion engine, comprises a wear-resistant layer on the carrier material, a running-in layer on the wear-resistant layer, and an adhesion-promoting layer present between the carrier material and the wear-resistant layer. A graded transition exists between the wear-resistant layer and the running-in layer. The abrasion-resistant coating is present on a ring bearing surface and/or a ring flank of the piston ring. Axial ring flanks are coated with the wear-resistant layer. The abrasion-resistant coating for a carrier material such as a piston ring useful in an internal combustion engine, comprises a wear-resistant layer on the carrier material, a running-in layer on the wear-resistant layer, and an adhesion-promoting layer present between the carrier material and the wear-resistant layer. A graded transition exists between the wear-resistant layer and the running-in layer. The abrasion-resistant coating is present on a ring bearing surface and/or a ring flank of the piston ring. Axial ring flanks are coated with the wear-resistant layer. The graduated layer of the wear-resistant layer to the running-in layer is present in a mixing ratio of 90 wt.% of the wear-resistant layer and 10 wt.% of the running-in layer up to 10 wt.% of the wear-resistant layer and 90 wt.% of the running-in layer. The graduated layer has a layer thickness of 300 mu m. The transition of the adhesion-promoting layer is formed to the wear-resistant layer in graded manner. An independent claim is included for a procedure for the production of an abrasion-resistant coating.
