The method involves capturing errors during an operation of an operating device by sensors and devices for detection of signals, which are assigned to function units and evaluated by determining a characteristic for likelihood of occurrence of one error cause. Another characteristic for denotation of the error cause of an error leading to a failure is determined. A third characteristic for likelihood of detection of the error cause is determined. An empirical value for a default risk of the device is output by a display unit, where the valve is determined by multiplication of characteristics.
