The air extraction system for the active combating of a fire in a traffic tunnel (1) creates oppositely-directed airflows (2) from both directions after outbreak of a fire and directs these to the source of fire or smoke at a calculated speed. This air is discharged outwards directly above the said source through an extraction opening (4) of the air extraction system (6a,6b), creating a suction funnel (5) over the entire cross section of the tunnel, including the fire or smoke source. Consequently, smoke is not distributed in the tunnel and the fire cannot develop.
