The method involves determining ultrasonic transit times of ultrasonic signals in and against a flow direction along a measuring section (1) and calculating flow rates of a flowing fluid e.g. water, based on differences of the determined transit times. Another measuring section (12) is provided adjacent to the section (1) for flow speeds of the fluid under a threshold value or a threshold. The fluid is supplied to one of the measuring sections depending on the flow rates or flow speeds. The fluid supply to the measuring section (12) is provided in a resting condition. An independent claim is also included for an ultrasound meter for determining flow rates of flowing fluids.
