The method involves detecting temporal characteristics of a parameter characterizing pressure in a rail (130). A frequency spectrum is determined by transformation from the temporal characteristics of the parameter into a frequency space. The transformation takes place in a frequency space via a Fourier transformation. Characteristics characterizing the fuel are locked from the temporal characteristics of the parameter. The characteristics characterizing the fuel are determined using a multi-layered artificial neural network and a rail pressure sensor. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a Computer program comprising instructions for performing a method for determining characteristics of fuel for a direct-injection internal-combustion engine (2) a computer program product comprising instructions for performing a method for determining characteristics of fuel for a direct-injection internal-combustion engine.
