Running in a shaft (1), the elevator car (2) includes a door threshold (5, 5') corresponding with door thresholds (6) of the shaft. A lighting- (7, 7') or optical signal unit is arranged in the elevator car threshold and/or the shaft threshold. The installation ensures that light from these units is radiated in an upward direction and/or horizontally to the front. The lighting unit illuminates with a conspicuous, warning and/or flashing color. It is light-emitting diode (LED) based. An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the method of elevator operation.
