The retractor (1) has a belt shaft (2) on which a belt strap is wound. A two-stage force limiting device (3) is arranged in force flow between a vehicle-sensitively and/or belt strap-sensitively blocking device and the shaft. The limiting device includes force limiting elements (4, 5) provided with high and low force limiting levels. A force limiting level is reversible from the high level to the low level during force limitation. A force limiting element (6) is parallel to the element (5) between the blocking device and the shaft and exhibits a degressive force limiting characteristic.
