The method involves applying a substance (13) on bars (2), which are arranged in a flow field (3). The bars are arranged and distributed over a cross section of the flow field. The bars are arranged parallel to each other. Aerodynamic profiles of the bars are arranged and shifted to each other. Different substances are applied with different temperature dependences of colors on different peripheral areas of the bars. The bars are rotated in order to turn the different peripheral areas alternately to a camera (6) e.g. color camera. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining a temperature distribution in a flow field with a substance with temperature-dependent color.
