The device has intersecting sharpening bars (4, 5) rotatably supported and spring-loaded on each other in a holder (1) that has an open knife inserting slot (8) at an end. The slot extends to an intersecting area of the bars, so that the bars are pushed apart from a sharpening position, in which the bars engage an intersecting angle against a spring action by a pressure of a knife (23). The bars are lockable with a locking device for sharpening of the knife in a pulling position, in which the intersecting angle of the bars is larger than the intersecting angle in the sharpening position.
