The method involves executing field switching depending on an operating condition of a universal motor. The field switching is conducted depending on a power reserve of the universal motor. The field switching is conducted while achieving a rotary speed threshold value. The universal motor is operated with an alternating voltage and direct current voltage. The field switching is conducted depending on a variable reserve during a phase ingate control of the motor. Characteristics e.g. voltage-speed-characteristics, of the motor are stored in a control unit of a household appliance. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a universal motor.
