The supply (1) has an inductor and two switches for controlling an energy flow through the inductor, where one of the switches is connected to an auxiliary converter or a step-up converter. A step-up converter operation (F1), a voltage controller operation (F2) and a step-down converter operation (F3) of the power supply are adjusted based on a voltage at an input-side of an onboard supply system of a motor vehicle or an actual output voltage. The controller operation provides a current path switchable parallel to the inductor from the supply system to an output of the power supply. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a switching power supply for producing a preset output voltage in an onboard supply system of a motor vehicle.
