The drive has a pick-up drum (2) for receiving stalk crops and leaves lying at a base, where the stalk crops and the leaves are transferred directly or over a downstream intermediate conveyor (18) of a downstream conveyor device (28) for forwarding into a pressing or loading space (34). The pick-up drum is driven directly by an electrical motor (6). The electrical motor is supplied and controlled by an on-board system of a towing vehicle or a self driver. The pick-up drum is rotatably supported on a rigid axle. The motor is formed as internal rotor motor or external rotor motor.
