The method comprises adding 2 ml of alcohol such as ethanol or methanol as carbon substrate to 100 liter of seawater for increasing the metabolic activities of an anaerobic bacterial strain, and removing the developing reaction products by a skimmer. The added solution has 40% of alcohol content. The addition of alcohol slowly takes place in the free seawater volume of a basin and not directly to the occupants of a seawater basin or corals. The nitrate content is measured for 24 hours after adding the alcohol and a renewed addition of alcohol is carried out during exceeding desired values.
