Method for separating ionic liquid from non-polar liquid mixtures comprising non-polar solvents as main components, ionic liquids and optionally other ingredients, where the weight ratio of ionic liquids to the non-polar solvent is less than 1:1000, comprises adsorbing the ionic liquid in an inorganic oxide carrier materials. An independent claim is included for a method for the preparation of homo- or co-polymer with a molecular weight of 10000-10000000 from a monomer with one or two polymerizable olefinic unsaturated double bond that comprises 3 or 4 carbon atoms and a desired comonomer with one or more polymerizable olefinic unsaturated double bond that comprises 3 or 30 carbon atoms and same or different monomers comprising polymerization or copolymerization of these olefinic monomers and/or olefinic monomer containing monomer mixture in liquid phase in the presence of non-polar solvent and at least one ionic liquid as polymerization catalyst, where after the polymerization, the ionic liquid is separated by adsorption on the inorganic oxide carrier material.
