A system includes a particulate matter (PM) filter that includes an upstream end for receiving exhaust gas, a downstream end, and at least a portion. A control module initiates combustion of PM in the PM filter using a heating element and selectively adjusts exhaust gas oxygen levels to adjust a combustion temperature adjacent the at least a portion of the PM filter. One method includes providing a particulate matter (PM) filter including an upstream end for receiving exhaust gas, a downstream end, and at least a portion; initiating combustion of PM in the PM filter using a heating element; selectively adjusting oxygen values of the exhaust gas to adjust a combustion temperature adjacent the at least a portion of the PM filter.
