The rectifier (10) has inlet terminals (14a, 14b, 14c) connected with a three phase alternating current network (12), and outlet terminals (18a, 18b) connected with a continuous current consumer/producer (16) i.e. current generator. A rectifier stage (20) is connected between the terminals, and has a semiconductor thyristor bridge (26) to rectify three phase current received on the inlet terminals. An active filter (36) is connected between the terminals. Protection units formed of a control unit (76) and a diode (82) protects the rectifier against short circuit formed between the terminals.
