The engine (1) has a cylinder axially defined by a cylinder head (7), and a piston (3) guided in the cylinder in an axial sliding manner. Another piston (4) is slidably guided, and is arranged between the piston (3) and the cylinder head. An introducing unit introduces incompressible fluid i.e. lubricating oil, between the pistons to separate the pistons by a variable volume control chamber (22) in a controlled manner. A transmission mechanism has a connecting rod (6) that is articulated on the piston (3). The connecting rod is connected to a crankshaft.
