Surface computer 21 is connected to a plurality of downhole tools 18 in the drilling assembly 9 by means of a high speed data bus 23. The downhole tools 18, which may include logging, measurement or steering devices, are connected to a single data port in the drill string, a telemetry tool 18a or a wireline device 31 for communication with the computer at the surface. Since data from the plurality of while drilling tools is downloaded using one connection, it is communicated more quickly than download by individual connection to the computer.
