PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for correcting code wheel misalignment.;SOLUTION: The device and the method employ upper and lower code wheel misalignment photodetectors 90a, 90b positioned above and below at least first and second motion detection photodetectors 41a, 43a. At one embodiment, the device and the method for automatically setting the gain of an output circuit in an optical encoder are included.
