PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recover the activity of a reformed catalyst while suppressing the sintering of the reformed catalyst. PSOLUTION: The reformed gas generation device 10 is provided with the reformed catalyst 62 for generating reformed gas from ethanol-blended gasoline, an exhaust gas catalyst 60 for heating the reformed catalyst, a pump 20 for reformation and an injector 22 for reformation for supplying the ethanol blended gasoline to the reformed catalyst 62, an upstream side EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) duct 48 for supplying EGR gas to the reformed catalyst 62 and an ECU (electronic control unit) 32. When the reformed catalyst 62 is in a temperature range (500-700C) lower than a temperature range in which sulfur precipitated in the reformed catalyst 62 in accordance with a reforming reaction can be burnt and removed, the ECU 32 recovers the activity of the reformed catalyst 62 by burning and removing carbon and hydrocarbon precipitated in the reformed catalyst 62 by stopping the supply of the ethanol-blended gasoline to the reformed catalyst 62 and supplying the EGR gas to the reformed catalyst 62.
