PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern matching method, a pattern matching device and an electronic component mounting method for detecting accurate recognition positions even when a background presenting non-uniform and partial luminance level change is overlapped. PSOLUTION: A template image in template matching is sub-divided like grids (a step S11), and sub-divided template images to be arranged so as to be overlapped are set (a step S12). Then, only a part contributing to positioning is used according to the contrast value of the respective divided template images (a step S14). Then, the plotting range of each sub-divided template image is moved so that the local contrast value can be made maximum (a step S16). Thus, it is possible to realize highly precise pattern recognition which is hardly affected by a background pattern by using the sub-divided template images configured by this method.
