Disclosed is a high voltage transformer (500). The transformer comprises a core (501), a high voltage coil (520) on the core, and a low voltage coil (510) on the core. The core comprises a pair of E cores (502, 503) forming a centre leg and two outer legs, each outer leg with an air gap between opposing legs of the E cores. The low voltage coil and the high voltage coil are on the centre leg. The high voltage coil comprises two subsets of coils, and the low voltage coil is placed between the subsets so they are kept apart. There is a distance from the low voltage coil to the air gaps.
