A method to assess whether or not an individual suffers from high-grade ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), said method comprising: (a) identifying an individual suspected of being at risk of suffering from high-grade DCIS; and (b) measure the level of psoriasin or psoriasin gene expression in a sample of a body fluid, a wash, a aspirate, a cell culture supernatant, or a sample of the individual's breast tissue; wherein said method includes determining whether or not said level is higher than the level of psoriasin or psoriasin gene expression that would be present in such a sample with respect to an individual with intermediate grade DCIS or low grade DCIS.
