PURPOSE: A method and a device for controlling a backlight dynamically are provided to compensate for backlight dimming by controlling the brightness of an image by minimizing the estimated distortion.;CONSTITUTION: The distortion of an image corresponding to a different mapping index set from the brightness level of an image is estimated(501). The optimum mapping index value corresponding to the maximum allowable distortion of the image is determined(502). The optimum mapping curve is selected from the mapping curve set corresponding to the mapping index value(503). The original pixel values are set to a new value set using the optimum mapping curve(504). The backlight is dimmed with the dimming coefficient determined by the optimum mapping index value(505). The distortion of the image is estimated based on the coefficient including the quantity exceeding the mapping index value corresponding to the brightness of the pixels and the number of the pixels with the brightness exceeding the mapping index value.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2010
