The controller has an image generating and control device producing signals (43-45) for a display device. The device has a microcontroller (28) that writes the image data of a background in an image memory. The microcontroller produces a rough illustration (41) of a display object e.g. indicator, and writes the illustration in a memory (30) e.g. dual-port-RAM. The control device has a programmable logic (31) that transforms the illustration based on measuring or allowed values, combines the illustration with the data and controls the display device according to the combined image data. An independent claim is also included for a method for graphical representation of measuring or allowed values by a display object on a programmable display area of a display device of a motor vehicle.
