The method involves testing whether a brake desire is present, during a thrust operation of an internal-combustion engine (1) e.g. petrol engine. An actuator (5) is controlled in the thrust operation of the internal-combustion engine in the sense of a reduction of air supply to the internal-combustion engine, in a closing position when the brake desire is not present. A signal of a position sensor (15) of a brake pedal is evaluated for testing presence of brake desire. The brake desire is recognized, if the signal of the position sensor indicates an actuation of the brake pedal. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal-combustion engine.
