The method involves operating a random generator (2) with an operating/emergency excitation for voltage supply of an electrical system (1) during normal/emergency operation. An electrical consumer (15) e.g. brake booster, is connected/separated to/from the system, and/or a number of revolutions of the generator is changed during the emergency operation and presence of an inadmissible deviation of a voltage of the system from a rated voltage for influencing the voltage of the system. A self-excitation and/or a permanent excitation of a rotor of the generator are used as emergency excitation.
