The system (1) has a central office (4) for monitoring a rental process of a set of bicycles (2). Each bicycle has an electronic identifier, a wireless transmission module and a global positioning system (GPS) chip, which are arranged such that the identifier and a position of the respective bicycle are transmitted to the central office over the transmission module. A solar cell module is provided at each of the bicycles for supplying power to the transmission module and the GPS chip, where the transmission module and the chip are arranged within a frame (7) of each bicycle. An independent claim is also included for a method for renting bicycles.
