The method involves feeding a thread continuously to a rotary driven winding carrier and coiled on a thread bobbin (1). The thread is guided back and forth for forming a coil winding (18) along a coil width of the thread bobbin. The thread is discarded after reaching a target diameter of the thread bobbin for forming a marking coil (14) on the periphery of thread bobbin. The thread is guided back and forth for forming a scrap coil on the periphery of thread bobbin. An independent claim is included for a device for winding a thread bobbin.
