The method involves storing information related to category and representation of components (1) together on a plan/blueprint (2), where the component information comprises a size (4) of representation, a point of reference (5) in the representation and an offset to the adjacent component. The information about the components is represented on the plan/blueprint, and data related to placement of the information is stored. The components are arranged on the plan/blueprint by a generator based on the component information and the placement data. The placement data comprises component category, insert point, maximum number of components permitted on the plan/blueprint, and a type of placement. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer-aided engineering system for placing components on a plan/blueprint of a system by a generator (2) a program for placing components on a plan/blueprint of a system by a generator (3) a computer program product with a program for placing components on a plan/blueprint of a system by a generator.
