The wear protective layer (3) comprises a matrix containing chromium (25-45 atom%), aluminum (5-15 atom%), nitrogen (35-55 atom%), oxygen and/or carbon, where metallic niobium (2-15 atom %) is stored in the matrix in the form of a solid solution. An additional niobium nitride is stored in the form of a separate phase. The portion of oxygen and/or carbon in the matrix is 5 atom%. The protective layer has a thickness of 5-70 mu m, hardness of 15-32 GPa, and a porosity of 2-15%. The protective layer has a residual stress of greater than 1, 000 N/mm 2at room temperature. The wear protective layer (3) comprises a matrix containing chromium (25-45 atom%), aluminum (5-15 atom%), nitrogen (35-55 atom%), oxygen and/or carbon, where metallic niobium (2-15 atom %) is stored in the matrix in the form of a solid solution. An additional niobium nitride is stored in the form of a separate phase. The portion of oxygen and/or carbon in the matrix is 5 atom%. The protective layer has a thickness of 5-70 mu m, hardness of 15-32 GPa, and a porosity of 2-15%. The protective layer has a residual stress of greater than 1, 000 N/mm 2at room temperature and exists in the form of a multi layered system, which is compounded from a sequence of single layer with different niobium content. The protective layer is produced by a physical vapor deposition. An independent claim is included for a sliding element.
