The method involves applying two postages on a postal item. Postage amounts assigned to the postages are determined, respectively, where each postage contains a marking. The marking is designed in such a manner that the respective postage applied on the postal item is verified during processing of the postal item. The marking contains information that the postage serves for payment of a differential amount between the postage amounts. A sum of the postage amounts is determined during payment verification. An entry point (1) is provided in a sorting machine for the postal item.
