The method involves determining reference signal value from a signal value of a temperature sensor (7) by a thermodynamic model (10), where the thermodynamic model simulates an exhaust gas aftertreatment unit (3) of an exhaust gas system (2). The reference signal value is compared with another signal value of another temperature sensor (8). A heat deviation is determined from difference between the reference signal value and the latter signal value.
