Extraction agent comprises 2,6-bis-(5-alkyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-pyridine compounds (I), at least one (preferably exactly one) lipophilic anion source and an organic or inorganic solvent. Extraction agent comprises 2,6-bis-(5-alkyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-pyridine compounds of formula (I), at least one (preferably exactly one) lipophilic anion source and an organic or inorganic solvent. R1 : n-butyl, 2-methylpropyl, 2,2-dimethyl propyl, n-hexyl or n-octyl; and R2 : H or tert-butyl. Independent claims are included for: (1) extracting/re-extracting actinide from a mixture of actinide and lanthanide comprising (a) providing the above extraction agent, (b) providing an aqueous (preferably nitric acid) sample mixture of the lanthanide and actinide, (c) mixing the extraction agent and sample mixture, optionally under continuously monitoring the mixture, (d) separating the organic phase containing actinide, and (e) optionally (e1) re-extracting by adding mineral acid, preferably nitric acid, and (e2) processing; (2) 2,6-bis-(5-alkyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-pyridine compounds (I); and (3) the preparation of (I) comprising (i) esterifying pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, (ii) reacting pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid ester (optionally substituted at 4th position) with alkylmethyl ketone to give the corresponding di-yl-dione, and (iii) reacting the obtained di-yl-dione with hydrazine to give (I).
