The method involves inputting a command by a touch panel. An electronic controller is switched from an operating mode to a waiting mode. The input is evaluated as an orientation input by the controller so that touched positions are treated as reference points of a virtual keyboard. The positions of virtual keys are automatically calculated with respect to the orientation and size of the virtual keyboard based on reference points. The input is evaluated as a keyboard input of alphanumeric keyboard input character, and the key is provided at a corresponding position of the virtual keyboard. An independent claim is also included for a device for performing a method for inputting a command for an electronic controller.
