The drive has switchable clutches arranged at each side of a wheel chair for coupling drive wheels (13) and gripping tires (6). The gripping tires are coupled with each other by a connecting shaft (11) in a torque-proof manner. The clutches are actuated by torsional moment applied at the guiding tires. The gripping tires are rotatably arranged opposite to gripping tires (15) that are coupled with the drive wheels. The clutches are formed as multi-disk clutches (7) and form-closure clutches. The shaft is formed as a hinge shaft or a flexible shaft.
