The method involves determining maximum length, where the length covers a virtual projection jet for penetration of an investigation object in a three-dimensional image data record (2) of a patient (1). Preset length is covered for each virtual projection jet. An associated virtual projection value is determined on the basis of three-dimensional image data of an investigation object and a correction variable that depends on individual length difference and variable whose value lies in the order of magnitude of three-dimensional image data value which represents the object in the data record.
