The method involves diverting a predetermined amount of a product from a flow rate during discharging of the product in a collecting vessel. An empty container or sample container (7) to be characterized with corresponding data to the sample container is provided by filling a partial amount of the diverted amount. The sample container is automatically closed and sealed after filling. The partial amount of the diverted predetermined amount is used for pre-washing of components, which are passed through the filling process. Filling level at the sample container is monitored during filling. An independent claim is also included for a device for performing sampling at product i.e. raw milk, comprising a sampling unit.
