The method involves determining the rate of utilization of an internal combustion engine i.e. diesel engine (2) from a ratio of a maximum torque of the internal combustion engine at a given speed to an actually determined torque at that speed, and controlling the speed of the internal combustion engine based on the rate of utilization of the internal combustion engine. A target speed of the internal combustion engine is determined based on comparison of an actual rate of utilization with an optimal rate of utilization of the internal combustion engine. An independent claim is also included for a mobile work machine including an internal combustion engine.
