The method involves implementing an automatic exchange between a frost endangered heat carrier i.e. water, and a frost-proof heat carrier i.e. glycol, based on temperature measured in a frost endangered region (2) of a heat transfer circuit (1). The frost endangered heat carrier is suppressed from the frost endangered region by inflow of the frost-proof heat carrier into the circuit in a mixing-free manner. An operating temperature in the frost endangered region is continuously detected, and the circuit is opened when the operating temperature exists with a frost endangered temperature value. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a heat transfer circuit.
