A wireless device configuration network positioned near a location from which a wireless device user will depart for a destination establishes a communication with the user's wireless communication device. During the communication, the wireless device configuration network determines a destination of the wireless device and whether the wireless device is capable of operating in a wireless system serving the destination. If the wireless device is capable of operating in a destination system, the configuration network communicates configuration information for the destination system to the wireless device. If the wireless device is capable of operating in multiple destination systems, a particular destination system is selected either automatically by the configuration network or manually by the device user. Upon receiving the configuration information, the wireless device configures itself for use in the destination system prior to arriving at the destination.
