The method involves calculating stiffness and/or damping effects of a steering column of an electric steering system, by using a value of angular position (thetav) of steering control element (25) i.e. steering wheel, of a steer by wire type electric steering system (20) and/or a mechanical action value resistant to orientation of steered wheels (28) and/or a mechanical action value assisting to orientation of wheels, where the actions are transmitted from another steering control element to the wheels via the column. Efforts applied on a pinion (27) are calculated. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a data medium comprising a software units for implementing a method for operating a mechanical action retrieving system (2) a retrieving system of mechanical action on steering control element of motor vehicle, comprising hardware and/or software units.
