The method involves carrying out negative polarization of a central measurement electrode (3) having a measurement surface aligned with an inner wall (9) of a combustion chamber such that the electrode attracts positive ions of a combustion flame (10) and ionization current is appeared in the electrode. Limit voltage and limit current of a limit point are determined. A distance (d) between the flame and the wall is determined by a specific relationship comprising parameters such as limit voltage, limit current, preset coefficient that is a function of pressure in the chamber and the surface.
