This patent refers on the development of poly electrolyte systems based on the polysaccharide ulvan, extracted from the green seaweed of the genera Ulva sp. and Enteromorpha sp. of the order Ulvales (Chlorophyta), and chitosan. The ulvan's anionic character is combined with the cationic character of chitosan in order to develop composite membranes of these biopolymers, as well as blend fibers of ulvan chitosan. Sedimentation of the membranes yields nanomembranes consisted of interconnected nanofibers.
