The present invention relates to a wavelet transform apparatus and method based on an update-prediction lifting scheme, to an adaptive prediction apparatus and method for same, and to a recording medium for same. The apparatus for predicting an odd-numbered polyphase sample from an even-numbered polyphase sample updated by the wavelet transform based on the update-prediction lifting scheme, comprises: a current sample matching unit which selects a first sample template-matched to the current even-numbered polyphase sample from among restored preceding samples; a basis function set having a plurality of basis functions which have a variety of directions and coefficients of a filter with respect to the updated even-numbered polyphase sample; a basis function selection unit which selects a specific basis function from among the plurality of basis functions on the basis of the first sample and the updated even-numbered polyphase sample; and a residual signal generating unit which obtains a residual odd-numbered polyphase sample on the basis of the selected specific basis function and the relevant odd-numbered polyphase sample, thereby selecting an optimum basis function which can effectively remove the spatial correlation within an image and minimize the subjective degradation of image quality, thus improving encoding efficiency and subjective image quality assessment.
