The present invention relates to feed composition for modulating animal digestive tract microbiota wherein the modulating comprises adding an extract of birch bark to animal feed. The invention further relates to the use of the birch bark extract for enhancement of animal performance and gastrointestinal health, for a preventing gastrointestinal disorders of animals, for enhancing nutrient absorption in upper and lower digestive tract, for changing microbial population and/or its metabolism, for decreasing adverse environmental effects and/or for decreasing the formation and/or absorption of harmful substances in the animal digestive tract.
