An apparatus and method for adaptive distance field synthesis based on distance values are disclosed. The data input unit receives and stores original data in the form of a distance field consisting of continuous scalar distance values representing a minimum distance from a three-dimensional surface included in the original image. The composite map generation unit generates a composite map in which the coordinate information selected from the original data is mapped to each successive coordinate with the same size as the synthesized image in order to generate a composite image in which the original image is expanded to include a non-periodic three-dimensional shape. . The composite map dividing unit repeatedly divides the composite map according to a preset maximum level. The composite map correcting unit corresponds to a corresponding point in the original data corresponding to the coordinate information mapped to the correction point among preset preset number of candidate points selected from the original data for the correction point selected from each cell generated at each division of the composite map. Coordinate information of candidate points having a minimum difference between neighboring information in a vector form defined for each candidate point is mapped. When the segmentation of the composite map and the mapping of the coordinate information are completed, the composite image generator generates a composite image based on the composite data including distance values corresponding to the coordinate information of the original data mapped to each coordinate of the composite map. According to the present invention, it is possible to generate a three-dimensional composite image quickly by reducing the amount of computation by adaptively sampling and updating the composite map according to the distance from the surface of the three-dimensional shape included in the original image.
