The mechanism has a hammer (2) mounted on a plate to strike a gong (21) at predetermined instants. An active buffer counter-spring (5) i.e. lever, maintains the hammer remote from the gong in a rest mode. A hammer driving spring (3) is armed for driving the hammer against the gong in a striking mode to produce acoustical sound. A stop (10) activates the counter-spring in the striking mode with a certain delay following to striking of the hammer against the gong, so that the counter-spring pushes the hammer towards a rest position after striking of the hammer against the gong.
