The engine has an operating cylinder (10) provided with an inlet valve (12) and an outlet valve (14). A combustion chamber preheating device preheats a combustion chamber in the operating cylinder before cold-start of the engine. The preheating device is provided with glow plugs (18) for the combustion chamber. The inlet valve and the outlet valve with centers on a straight line (20) are arranged in a plane perpendicular to the operating cylinder. The glow plugs are arranged at opposite sides of the straight line, where the straight line defines sectors from each other.
